A Moscow Mule This Holiday Season
A Moscow Mule This Holiday Season is a great idea if you love the taste of ginger and you want to serve something that not everyone has had before. So Let’s start the party and serve our guests a Cranberry Moscow Mule this season.
A Moscow Mule is a very special drink that has Ginger Beer as one of the ingredients. Now it is not really beer, more on that later. Let’s make a Cranberry Moscow Mule and while we sip it we can review it’s history a little. Adding the cranberry juice will give it a little holiday spirit.
- 3 oz. premium vodka
- 1 oz. 100% cranberry juice
- ½ ounce fresh lime juice
- 8 ounces of ginger beer
- Garnish: (optional)
- fresh rosemary sprigs, bottom leaves removed, approximately 2-3” long
- fresh cranberries
- fresh lime wedges
- Squeeze the lime juice into a Moscow Mule Mug or a Collins glass
- Add 2 or 3 ice cubes,
- Pour in the vodka and cranberry Juice
- Fill with cold ginger beer (not ginger ale)
- Serve with a stirring rod.
Ginger beer originated in the mid 1700’s in England. Most of what you find on sale today in the states is produced in Jamaica. Ginger beer originally had an alcohol content of up to 11% by volume which came from fermented ginger.
Today, if sold in the soda aisle ginger beer will contain less than 0.5% alcohol by volume which makes it legally non alcoholic.
Back in the 1940’s vodka was not a popular drink in the United States. The importer of Smirnoff Vodka, John Martin, was in a pub called the Cock N Bull in Hollywood, complaining to the bar owner that he could not move the vodka. The owner of the pub, Jack Morgan made Ginger Beer but that was not moving so well. Sitting with them was another businessman that had a warehouse of copper mugs he could not move. They mixed everything together and the Moscow Mule was born. If you want a true Moscow Mule you will want to get one or more of those mugs. Just click on the picture and check them out.
They also make a great Holiday gift as this set comes with a recipe book as well as the shot glass and Mugs. I have my own set of mugs, but then some say I am addicted to ginger. While I do grow ginger and make my own ginger beer it’s really the lime that I secretly love.
One word of advice, If you drink more than a couple of these at any one time, you might just feel like you have been kicked by the Mule later……You have been warned……
