During a recent visit to Wisconsin My wife and I decided to enjoy a late breakfast at an IHOP restaurant as she really enjoys their Harvest Grain Pancakes. While she is not following a ketogenic lifestyle as I am, there is usually always something on the menu of a restaurant that I can enjoy while she enjoys an old favorite such as IHOP’s Harvest Grain Pancakes.
After reviewing the menu I decided on the Egg white Vegetable Omelette with fresh spinach, onion, pepperjack cheese, diced fresh tomato and avocado. Now following the ketogenic lifestyle we want to eat the egg yolk because that is where all the good stuff is, but this just sounded so good and I knew I would be getting good fats from the cheese and avocado. I have found that while rules should not be broken it is ok to bend them a little when it comes to your meals, as long as you don’t do it to often.
The omelette also came with a side of fresh fruit which I gave to my wife to enjoy as I was not carb cycling at that time so fresh melon was not on my list of acceptable foods.
As a chef I was very impressed when the meal arrived. Picture perfect. This IHOP restaurant was as busy as it gets with about a 10 minute wait to get seated which meant that the cooks in the kitchen were working about as fast as they could, still they were not “cutting corners” . I would recommend this IHOP to anyone looking for a good breakfast, knowing that what they see on the menu is what they will get on their plate when the meal is served.
Worth doing again? Well that depends, which brings us to the Challenges Of Eating Keto At IHOP
This past week we were driving back to our place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and stopped for the night just outside of Little Rock, Az. There were a few restaurants to choose from but the IHOP appealed to my wife as it would be the last chance for her to enjoy the multigrain pancakes as we do not have an IHOP anywhere near where we live.
It was a not brainer for me, just order the Eggwhite vegetable omelette while the wife has her pancakes. The place was not crowed so it did not take long for our meal to arrive. What a disappointment. I guess the cook had never seen the picture of what he/she was asked to cook. This is what arrived at our table.
They had also added some pancake dough to the egg mix to make it “Fluffy” which of course is not part of the keto food group. A complete lack of eye appeal and to remain in ketosis, a person would need to dig out the spinach, and then eat the spinach, tomato and avocado which is not a good value for the price.
Will we eat at IHOP again? Sure we will – but I will order a couple of eggs over-medium with a side of sliced fresh avocado and fresh tomato slices, while enjoying their coffee. If I am carb cycling I can order a side of fresh fruit such as strawberries if I am really hungry. I will stay away from “scrambled eggs” just because I am not sure if they might add a little pancake mix to make them more fluffy.
